Reading Plans for the Week
I’d like to share a sample 1:1 reading and writing plan based on reading comprehension workshop I have attended, studies I have read and methods used by some teachers.
Generate reading appropriate to grade level. ( use AI, apps, or online resources )
Generate vocabulary list, and preview the words, define them using grade level language
Have student read story out loud and then use ChatGPT voice to have it read back to the student
I like to stop after every paragraph to have a short discussion and probe for understanding.
Ask 5 WH questions from the reading
Practice Main Idea and three supporting details
Have student write sentence using vocabulary learned
Have student describe the reading in their own words, encourage discussions
Have student write a short summary of the reading.
All this can be adjusted to the level of the student, steps can be skipped or modified for lower grade reading levels. I like to incorporate videos and images sometimes for the material to be more vivid for the student. It would be great to have students who are interested in art to make illustrated story of the reading. I found the writing and retelling part the most challenging. I need to work on balancing critique with not overwhelming. I enjoy this 1:1 time. I think it’s a great way to get to know the student and exchange ideas. I would love to interview reading experts, educators in the future.
